Essay 2 — a close reading

Pick one passage from the first half of the novel and argue how its form carries its meaning. 900 words, cite line numbers.

One passage, no more than a page of it. Your job is to show how the writing works — the sentence lengths, the images, what gets repeated — and then say what that machinery is for.

A summary of the plot is not a close reading. If your essay would still make sense with a different passage swapped in, you have written the wrong essay.
