Problem Set 7 — Matrices

Questions 1–18 from the chapter. Show your working on the augmented-matrix problems; the answer alone will not get the marks.

Questions 1 to 9 are drill: multiply, transpose, and find the determinant. Do them quickly and check yourself against the answers at the back. Questions 10 to 18 are the ones that matter, and every one of them wants to see the row operations you used.

If a system has no solution, say so and point at the row that proves it. Half the marks on this set are for the argument, not the arithmetic.

For question 14, do we row-reduce all the way or stop once the pivots are in place?

All the way to reduced form. If you stop early I cannot tell a shortcut from a mistake.

Worth checking your arithmetic on 17 twice. The numbers get ugly on purpose.
